Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials have started testing local eggs as to whether they were tainted with melamine, after health officials in Hong Kong found eggs there were melamine contaminated.
FDA Secretary-general Pipat Yingseri said it was possible eggs tainted with melamine found in Hong Kong could have been a result of hens eating fishmeal and soybean meal to increase protein.
In Thailand, the FDA had coordinated with the Livestock Development Department to help conduct tests on more animal feedmeals.
Dr Pipat urged consumers not to panic and said his office would also collect local hen eggs for testing the results of which should be known soon.
Meanwhile, ‘Myojo’ and ‘Nissin’ brands of instant noodles in Thailand were reportedly found to be tainted with pesticide. Dr Pipat said officials were checking production lots of the noodles. Japanese health officials are also checking on the products. (TNA)
